What can you possibly accomplish in a 200 or even 100 word story? You’ll surprise yourself and see immediate success in this weeklong retreat focused on the short form. During our week together, we’ll examine and write micro memoir — true stories told in 200 words or less — then go even smaller with 100-word stories (such as the New York Times‘ popular Tiny Love Stories).
Every morning will feature a 60-90 minute craft class, and every afternoon we’ll meet together in an hour-long group critique. You’ll come away with five superbly crafted pieces suitable for submission — and submit one 100-word story to the NYT’s Tiny Love Stories column during your stay.
And you’ll have plenty of time to write indoors or out at our five-bedroom house overlooking a tidal inlet and walk the ocean beach just two blocks away.
Micro Memoir Week 2020 is limited to four writers only. While I have taught this workshop at various venues in 2019 (Hippocamp, Pyramid Lake Writer’s Center, Hobart Festival of Women Writers, my own Outer Banks Retreat), this is the only residential full-week Micro Memoir workshop I am offering in 2020, and I’m looking forward to this intensive week with a small, dedicated group.
This weeklong retreat is for both beginning writers and those who’ve been writing for years but want to concentrate on short, tight composition with a complete story arc: beginning, middle, end.
Included in your cost are daily workshops and critiques from Sunday-Friday, the room of your choice, and airport transfers (pick-up and drop-off). While you are welcome to stay through Saturday, February 28 at 9 am, the Micro Memoir retreat ends at 6 pm Friday, February 27. Check-in/arrival begins at 4 pm Saturday, February 22.
